Kharkiv regional administration head's security tightened over letter on assassination preparations
KHARKIV. July 24 (Interfax) - Kharkiv regional administration head Ihor Rainin's personal security has been tightened after security agencies received information on possible plans to assassinate him, says Anatoly Dmytriyev, the chief of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry department for the Kharkiv region.
"In keeping with the law, the investigative agencies of our main department have issued instructions to the Gryphon task force to step up security," Dmytriyev told journalists on Friday.
Police are taking a number of measures to find the author of a letter reporting preparations for an assassination attempt on Rainin, including through an IP address, he said.
Increased security measures were also taken during a press conference at which Rainin and the regional security chiefs talked on Friday, he said.
It was reported earlier that the Interior Ministry department for the Kharkiv region had received an anonymous letter reporting plans of unidentified individuals to assassinate Rainin.
"It followed from the message that [these unidentified individuals] planned the crime for July 24, during a press conference attended by Ihor Rainin and the chiefs of the regional security agencies," the Interior Ministry department for the Kharkiv region said in a statement.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the incident.
