Almaty police say mudflow of July 23 caused no deaths, blames social media for disinformation
ALMATY. July 28 (Interfax) - Reports about alleged deaths resulting from the recent mudflow in Kazakhstan had been distributed through social media, were false, according to the police authorities of the city of Almaty.
The statement of the press service of the Interior Department of the Kazakh city distributed on Tuesday said: "In relation of the inaccurate information in the social media about alleged victims of the disaster, according to which dead bodies were found during rescue work and dealing with the mudflow's consequences, the Interior Department of Almaty declares that the information is false."
"There are no deaths caused by the mudflow," the police said.
The Kargaly River water levels rose abruptly in then early hours of July 23 in Nauryzbai city district of Almaty as a result of a mudflow from a mountain moraine-dammed lake. Dozens of homes were filled with mud. Over 1,000 people were evacuated from the mudflow-hit area with five people admitted to hospital. There were no fatalities. An emergency situation was declared in Almaty.
