UN Counter-Terrorism Committee rep stresses importance of pooling efforts to fight ISIS

YAROSLAVL. July 29 (Interfax) - Representative of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorist Committee Chen Weixiong has praised the current international conference of heads of special services, security forces and law enforcement bodies in Yaroslavl in the context of resisting international terrorism.

The ISIS threat is multivectoral - ISIS activities within the zone of its operations proper on the one hand, and terrorists streaming from the whole world to help ISIS on the other, he said to journalists in the framework of the international conference in Yaroslavl.

He said that a key objective for the United Nations is to make all members of the international community understand the need to amplify responsibility for the involvement of citizens of any nation in ISIS for the militant-terrorists.

Chen said that territorial remoteness should not be a reason for self-complacence for the countries located far from Iraq or Syria where ISIS is actively operating at the present moment.

He said that the UN is satisfied with the fact that not only Russia but also Central Asian states demonstrate an adequate understanding of the threat and that cooperation in the regional format is being established.

Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) Zhang Xinfeng stressed the importance of the international conference on resisting international terrorism organized by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).

"Militants returning from ISIS pose a great threat to SCO countries and countermeasures are being adopted in the framework of RATS," he told reporters.

He said that information exchanges have been arranged within SCO, and several joint operations are being conducted to combat international terrorist organizations.
