Minsk interested in comprehensive cooperation with U.S. despite existing political disagreements - Lukashenko

MINSK. Aug 3 (Interfax) - Belarus is interested in supporting and developing comprehensive cooperation with the United States; the relations between the two countries have more factors bringing them closer than disagreements, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

"Despite the existence of some disagreements in the political sector I am certain that there are fewer problematic issues separating us than positive factors bringing us closer," the BelTA state agency quoted Lukashenko as saying at a meeting with a delegation of U.S. congressmen in Minsk on Monday.

"Actually, we have never retreated from this position, even in the worst times of our relations," the Belarusian president said.

"And Belarusian-U.S. relations did not stop even during these most difficult times, even then. We have always cooperated on ensuring global and regional security, which is especially pressing today, and on preventing illegal transit of nuclear materials," Lukashenko said.

"We do not like it when we are pushed in the back and we will never agree when some will is imposed on is," he said.

"But if you propose to us variants, which will advance our country towards sovereignty, more independence, if you propose to us variants, which will improve the life of the Belarusian people, we will be very grateful to you and will take them onboard," Lukashenko said.
