Man suspected of killing six children, wife detained in Vladimir region

MOSCOW. Aug 5 (Interfax) - The police have detained Oleg Belov, who is suspected of killing his six children and wife in Nizhny Novgorod, he has been detained in the Vladimir region, Interior Ministry official Yelena Alekseyeva told Interfax.

"The man suspected of killing his children and wife in Nizhny Novgorod was detained in the city of Kovrov, Vladimir region," Alekseyeva said.

Alekseyeva said Belov resisted police during the detention, but no police officers were hurt.

Vladimir Markin from the Investigative Committee told Interfax that the investigators are now working with Belov.

In the meantime, a source in the law enforcement agencies told Interfax that Belov was wounded in the stomach during his detention and was admitted to hospital.

The source said the garden house where Belov was hiding in Kovrov is believed to belong to his mother-in-law.

The source said a special task force was used in the operation to detain Belov.

A different source in the law enforcement agencies told Interfax that Belov had attacked a police officer with a knife and the policeman defended himself by firing a shot at him, wounding him in the liver.

Belov was admitted to hospital in a serious condition, the source said.

According to earlier reports, investigators and police found dismembered remains of six children and presumably their mother in an apartment in the Nizhny Novgorod Nizhegorodsky district on Tuesday. According to some reports, the woman was pregnant.

The children had stopped attending kindergarten from July 25, and the staff alerted the police. During a check on the family at its home address, no one opened the door and neighbors reported having seen the father leaving in an unknown direction the day before.
