Radiation levels normal in Russia as wildfire still burns near Chernobyl - Rospotrebnadzor

MOSCOW. Aug 13 (Interfax) - Russia's health and consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor has not observed any increase in radiation levels on the Russian territory as a wildfire continues to burn near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

"Monitoring results indicate that no increase of the natural background gamma radiation levels has been registered," the Rospotrebnadzor press service told Interfax on Thursday.

Radiation levels in Russia's regions near the border with Ukraine are monitored on a daily basis due to the forest fire raging on the premises of the Chernobyl Pushcha forestry area in the exclusion and compulsory evacuation zone, the watchdog said.

A wildfire has been burning on the premises of the Chernobyl Pushcha forestry area in the exclusion and compulsory evacuation zone in Ukraine for the past five days. Ukraine's State Emergency Situations Service said on Thursday that efforts to extinguish the fire continued round-the-clock and the situation was under control.
