First population census in 25 years to take place in S. Ossetia
TSKHINVALI. Aug 17 (Interfax) - A population census will take place in South Ossetia in October, Inal Tibilov, the head of the republic's statistics department, told Interfax on Monday.
"Over 250 people will be engaged in the census. The main phase is scheduled for October 15-30. A preliminary count of citizens has been conducted, the census lists have been approved, as we will get them soon. Every administrative unit has its own schedule, they all form a general plan for the republic. That is, our every step has been determined and approved and we will work according to this plan," Tibilov said.
The results of the census of South Ossetia's population will help make more exact social and economic programs for the republic in the future.
"The census results will be published in early 2016. We will count the census results by the end of the year and we will publish them in early 2016: we will prepare printed publications and we will make a site where all the information will be reflected," Tibilov said.
Tibilov said addresses to the population through local television and radio are being prepared calling for participation in the census, and posters and banners will be put for this purpose.
The most recent population census in South Ossetia was conducted in 1989. The republic then had a population of 98,500 people, including 65,000 Ossetians, 28,000 Georgians and 2,000 Russians. The other people were Armenians, Jews and people of other ethnicities.
