Russian Foreign Ministry pledges further humanitarian aid to Syria, evacuation of Russians

MOSCOW. Aug 18 (Interfax) - Russia will continue to render humanitarian aid to Syria and to help Russian nationals leave that country if they wish to do so, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

"The Russian Federation will continue to render necessary humanitarian assistance to the friendly Syrian people and to assist Russian citizens who may wish to temporarily leave the Syrian Arab Republic," the ministry said in a report posted on its website.

A plane of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry airlifted over 20 tonnes of Russian humanitarian aid to the Syrian city of Latakia on August 17, the ministry said.

"The return flight to Moscow transported a group of citizens of the Russian Federation and a number of CIS countries permanently residing in Syria and their family members who wished to leave the armed conflict zone for security reasons," the ministry said.

According to it, 59 people took the Emergency Situations Ministry flight to Moscow.
