Poroshenko proposes that firing in Donbas be stopped immediately

KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called for an immediate end to the firing in the eastern part of Ukraine.

"I think we shouldn't wait until September 1. As president of Ukraine, I am interested in seeing the firing stopped immediately today at 1:20 p.m. [Brussels time]," Poroshenko said following negotiations with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels on Thursday, referring to the time at which he was saying these words.

"Why should we wait for another week before the firing is stopped? This is Russia's direct obligation. We have stopped firing on our part. I propose that the firing be stopped right away," he said.

"Who knows how many lives it would cost to wait until September 1?" he said.

The Trilateral Contact Group reached an agreement in Minsk on Wednesday that the firing in eastern Ukraine be stopped by September 1.
