Kazatomprom to supply uranium to North America via China

ASTANA. Sept 2 (Interfax) - State-owned nuclear holding company Kazatomprom and China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation (CNEIC) have agreed on the temporary storage in China of natural uranium concentrate routed to North America, the Kazatomprom press service said on Wednesday.

The agreement was signed by Kazatomprom CEO Askar Zhumagaliyev and CNEIC President Liu Chunsheng on the margins of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's visit to the People's Republic of China.

The contract provides temporary storage of the goods and their transit via China to western ports of the United States and Canada.

Cooperation between Kazakhstan and China will diversify the routes of delivery of Kazatomprom's uranium products to the global market, the report said.

Zhumagaliyev also met with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) General Director Qian Zhimin to discuss mutually advantageous cooperation in peaceful uses of atomic energy, the report said.

CNNC is a major company possessing a full nuclear cycle. CNNC Group unites 110 subsidiary entities. The corporation operates six nuclear power plants with twelve reactor units with a total capacity of 9,800 megawatts.

CNEIC is a CNNC subsidiary exporting and importing nuclear fuel cycle products.

Kazatomprom is Kazakhstan's national operator exporting uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, specialized equipment, technologies and dual-use materials.
