Yatsenyuk's idea to collect debts from former political leaders is 'blow to Ukrainian statehood' - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Sept 3 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry deems the suggestion of Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk that Moscow should collect Ukrainian debts from those who borrowed money from it to be a major blow to Ukrainian statehood.

The Ukrainian prime minister offered Russia to claim debts from the former Ukrainian president in the case it did not like the state debt restructuring terms proposed by Kyiv.

"The phrase 'claim from those to whom you gave [the money]' is a novelty in international law. Such statements are a major blow to Ukrainian statehood," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told Interfax in her comments on the statement of the Ukrainian premier.

"We have another legitimate question: whether they apply this approach to other areas of activity of the Ukrainian state," she wondered.

In a television program "Ten Minutes with the Prime Minister" Yatsenyuk offered Russia to accept state debt restructuring terms similar to those Kyiv had agreed upon with the committee of creditors and said there would not be a better offer from the Ukrainian authorities.
