Moldovan PM to protesters: Govt's resignation would destabilize situation

CHISINAU. Sept 10 (Interfax) - Moldovan Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet said at a meeting with representatives of the so-called Council of the Grand National Assembly that the government would not resign.

"We are prepared to discuss all issues and the protesters' demands, except for the government's resignation. If you agree to discuss people's problems, we are prepared for this. We are prepared to develop a road map together so as to move forward and resolve the people's problems together," he said.

"The government's resignation would destabilize the situation, which cannot be allowed in any circumstances," he said.

"There are too many forces interested in destabilizing the situation and turning the country away from its strategic course towards European integration. If you agree with this, we are ready to discuss this and set up a joint commission that would address all these problems. I repeat: discuss all issues except for the government's resignation," Strelet said.

Andrei Nastase, the chairman of the Council of the Grand National Assembly, said, "This is the fourth protest but the authorities haven't done anything to satisfy at least part of the protesters' demands."

"We don't want to discuss problems but to make sure that they are resolved. This is within the authorities' powers. If the authorities have not done this, then they must go. We will insist on meeting our demands, that is, the people's demands voiced at a rally of 100,000," Nastase said.
