Lukashenko becomes presidential candidate for fifth time
MINSK. Sept 10 (Interfax) - Incumbent Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been registered as a candidate to the post of president of Belarus.
This decision was made by the Central Election Commission on Thursday, an Interfax correspondent has reported.
Lukashenko is thus running for president for a fifth time.
Sergei Gaidukevich, chairman of the Belarusian Liberal-Democratic Party, has also been registered as a presidential candidate.
Gaidukevich is running for president for a fourth time: he received 2.48% of the votes (the least of all the candidates) in 2001 and 3.5% in 2006 (taking third place among the candidates). In the 2010 elections, Gaidukevich withdrew his candidacy after collecting signatures.
Nikolai Ulakhovich, supreme ataman of the association Belarusian Cossacks, has also been registered as a presidential candidate.
The Central Election Commission has also recognized the right of Tatyana Korotkevich, an activist of the civil campaign Speak the Truth!, to run in the elections.
