Estonian and Russian foreign ministers to meet on sidelines of UN General Assembly session
TALLINN. Sept 22 (Interfax) - The foreign ministers of Estonia and Russia, Marina Kaljurand and Sergei Lavrov, will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on September 27.
Estonian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Belovas told Interfax that "the priority issues to be discussed in New York have not yet been determined, which is why it is still too early to speak about any specific agenda."
As she was appointed to the post of Estonia's foreign minister in July, Kaljurand told Interfax that such a meeting was being prepared and if it took place Tallinn intended to use it to discuss issues surrounding the ratification of border treaties and the conviction of Estonian security police officer Eston Kohver in Russia.
Estonia has raised the Kohver issue at various international events more than once. The Estonian authorities describe his detention on Estonian territory on September 5, 2014, as illegal, whereas the Russian side argues that Kohver was detained on Russian territory carrying weapons, specialized equipment and a big wad of money. On August 19, Kohver was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Russia's Pskov Region Court.
It will be the first meeting of the Russian and Estonian foreign ministers since February 18, 2014, when treaties on the two countries' land and sea borders were signed in Moscow.
