Russian watchdog seizes over 720 t of bad quality food, fines businesses 3.5 bln rubles

MOSCOW. Sept 23 (Interfax) - More than 720 tonnes of bad quality food products were seized in the first half of 2015 following inspections by the Federal Consumer Rights Protection Service, the Russian watchdog told Interfax on Wednesday.

More than 35,000 batches of food products totalling over 720 tonnes were seized because they did not meet quality standards, the watchdog said.

The watchdog imposed a total of 3.5 billion rubles in administrative fines against businesses involved in production of food products, food services and retail sales of food products, the public health service said.

The service said that 226 reports of counterfeit dairy products were filed with its emergency warning system in the first half. As a result of inspections, the watchdog removed more than 27,000 kg of counterfeit dairy products from sale.

The service said that it conducted more than 37,000 inspections of food producers, food services providers and food retailers in the first half, and took 836,000 samples for lab testing.

The service also said that, according to tests, imported products turned out to be substandard more frequently than domestic products.
