Irkutsk police denies reports of attack on Communist Party vehicle

IRKUTSK. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Irkutsk regional police has denied claims by the Russian Communist Party that its vehicle had been attacked on the day the region is holding the second round of the gubernatorial election.

"The driver of the vehicle heard sounds of gunshots and claimed there was damage, but police who inspected the car found no traces of gunshots," a source told Interfax.

The region's chief election officer Eduard Devitsky told journalists the alleged incident was not confirmed.

Overall, the election committee received 13 complaints from representatives of governor candidates Sergei Yeroshchenko and Sergei Levchenko, but none of the violations alleged in them has yet been confirmed, the official said.

Alexei Petrov of the Golos movement, which campaigns for voters' rights, and the Communist Party's regional office said earlier on Sunday that the a vehicle of the mobile service for maintaining Communist Party monitors, which was moving between stations, had been attacked. No one was injured.

The candidates in the second round are the region's acting governor Sergei Yeroshchenko, who has been backed by United Russia, and State Duma deputy Sergei Levchenko of the Russian Communist Party.

In the first round of the election there were four candidates: Yeroshchenko, Levchenko, Oleg Kuznetsov from the Russian Liberal Democratic Party and Larisa Yegorova nominated by A Just Russia Party. The first round was won by Yeroshenko with 49.6% of votes and Levchenko with 36.61%. The turnout in the first round was 29.19%.
