Russia calls for resumption of six-party talks on Korean nuclear problem - Matviyenko
MOSCOW. Sept 30 (Interfax) - Russia calls for the resumption of the six-party talks on the resolution of the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula and does not accept Pyongyang's course towards acquiring nuclear missile potential, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said.
"We consistently call for the resumption of the six-party talks on the resolution of the nuclear problem on the Korean Peninsula. Here we have one goal - to attain the nuclear-free status of the peninsula," Matviyenko said at a meeting with Speaker of the South Korean National Assembly Chung Eui-hwa.
"We do not equally accept Pyongyang's course towards acquiring nuclear missile potential," she said.
Russia is interested in peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, Matviyenko said.
"We count on the inter-Korean agreements, which were reached in August, paving the way to the unblocking of the deadlocked situation which has emerged in inter-Korean relations and the establishment of full-format dialogue between South Korea and the Korean People's Democratic Republic," she said.
Russia still believes that all current problems may and should be resolved at the negotiating table, in diplomatic ways, but not through mutual threats or, moreover, forcible actions, Matviyenko said.
