Russian foreign ministry calls for end to violence in Central African Republic

MOSCOW. Sept 30 (Interfax) - The Russian foreign ministry has called for an immediate end to the violence in the Central African Republic (CAR).

"Moscow calls for a prompt normalization of conditions and reinstatement of law and public order across all territory of the CAR. We are calling on all influential political forces of the country to immediately stop the violence, which is resulting in numerous casualties among civilians and also undermining the political processes of the transition period," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement published on its official website.

The violent death of a representative of the Muslim community in the country's capital Bangui on September 26 triggered clashes between supporters of the former Islamist coalition, 'Seleka', and combatants from Anti-Balaka, the Christian militia, leaving more than 40 people dead. Around 30,000 people have been displaced. A curfew has been introduced in the capital city, the Russian foreign ministry's website says.

"According to information available to the Russian Embassy in Bangui, there are no casualties among Russian citizens," the ministry says.
