Duma chairman: International Parliamentary Forum should be transformed into intl organization

MOSCOW. Oct 1 (Interfax) - Russian State Duma Chairman Sergei Naryshkin has proposed transforming the International Parliamentary Forum into a new international organization.

"It's time for us to think about transforming our forum, which has already become regular, into a new international organization," Naryshkin said when opening the 4th International Parliamentary Forum in Moscow on Thursday.

While saying that he did not intend to press for giving an answer to his proposal immediately, Naryshkin pointed out that "the main goal is obvious here: it is a dialogue in favor of consolidating international law and confidence."

"A parliamentarian's mandate rests on the people's will, and their representatives must say what they think and vote in keeping with their conscience. In fact, this is exactly what is highlighted in the draft resolution on the unacceptability of sanctions against parliamentarians that we have submitted to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly," he said.

"There exist about thirty multilateral inter-parliamentary assemblies and organizations, but most of them are regional in nature, and there is no special parliamentary forum in the UN either," he said.

At the same time, "the Moscow forum takes place in the center of the huge Eurasian continent, the geography of its participants is unlimited, and I think it has already become a substantial dialogue structure," he said.
