Syrian opposition urges Damascus to hold free parliamentary elections - Astana draft declaration

ASTANA. Oct 3 (Interfax) - Members of Syria's moderate opposition attending negotiations in the Kazakh capital Astana have called for free parliamentary elections to be held in Syria in 2016 under international monitoring.

The participants in the inter-Syrian talks in Astana discussed their final draft declaration on Saturday.

"What we propose is, firstly, free parliamentary elections under international monitoring and with security guarantees for participants in these elections," according to the draft document seen by Interfax.

As a result of these elections, Syria should form a national government with broad powers, in which all sectors of Syrian society will be represented irrespective of their faith, ethnicity and background, the document's second point says.

One of the key conditions for holding these polls is the opposition's participation in them.
