Military means only cannot defeat terrorism - Jordanian senate speaker

AMMAN. Oct 6 (Interfax) - Hunger, unemployment and dictatorship are among reasons that assist the expansion of terrorism and it is wrong to think that only military actions can eradicate this evil, Jordanian Senate President Abdelraouf al-Rawabdeh said.

"Apparently, youth are subject to these unwise ideas as a result of the serious reasons that they face, such as hunger, unemployment, the absence of democracy and dictatorship," al-Rawabdeh said at a meeting with Russian Federation Council speaker Valentina Matviyenko who is visiting Jordan.

That was the message of the recent speech by Abdullah II of Jordan at the UN General Assembly, he said. "He stressed in the speech that all the countries of world need to actively move in the direction of development to put an end to hunger, unemployment and other reasons that entail the expansion of terrorism," he said.

"It is wrong to think that terrorism can be eradicated by military and special services' actions only," he said.

"It is in people's hot heads. That is why we are certain that the fight against terrorism should be carried out among the older generation as well, who engage youth into terrorism," al-Rawabdeh said.
