Russia verifying info about new violation of Turkish airspace - embassy in Ankara

MOSCOW/ANKARA. Oct 6 (Interfax) - Russia's Embassy in Turkey has confirmed that the Russian ambassador was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry following reports about a second violation of Turkey's airspace by a Russian Air Force plane operating in Syria.

According to the Turkish side, the violation occurred on October 4.

Russia is currently verifying information about the incident.

"Indeed, the ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry of Turkey, where he was informed of the incident. We are verifying this information," press officer of the Russian Embassy in Ankara Igor Mityakov told Interfax by phone on Tuesday.

All explanations concerning this situation "will be offered," he said.

Western media reported earlier that Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov had been summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry over a second violation of Turkey's airspace by a Russian Air Force plane, which, according to the Turkish side, occurred on Sunday, October 4.

It was reported earlier that on Monday the Turkish Foreign Ministry had summoned the Russian ambassador to Ankara for the first time to express its protest over an October 3 violation of Turkey's airspace by a Russian military airplane operating in Syria. The Russian Defense Ministry, for its part, said that the violation had taken place due to poor weather and all the necessary measures had already been taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
