Russian, Finnish leaders call for consolidating efforts of all states seeking to combat ISIL - Kremlin

MOSCOW. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto had a telephone conversation at the initiative of the Finnish side, the sides discussed the struggle against ISIL and the settlement in Ukraine, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

"In the exchange of opinions on the situation in Syria the sides called for consolidating the efforts of all interested states for collective counteraction to the terrorist threat coming from the so-called Islamic State and other terrorist groupings," it said.

The Russian president dwelt in detail on the progress of an operation, which the Russian armed forces are carrying out to destroy the terrorist units in Syria.

"At the request of the Finnish president Vladimir Putin assessed the main outcomes of the 'Normandy format' meeting in Paris on October 2. It was noted that the further settlement of the domestic Ukrainian crisis depends at a considerable degree on Kyiv's implementation of all the clauses of the Minsk Package of Measures adopted in February," the Kremlin said.

Meanwhile, several current issues of Russian-Finnish relations, including political contacts at different levels were discussed. The presidents focused on the situation in the trade and economic cooperation and the prospects of its development.
