OSCE may consider conducting peacekeeping operations - secretary general

MOSCOW. Oct 12 (Interfax) - OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier said he does not rule out the possibility of the issue of the OSCE conducting peacekeeping operations being discussed at the level of the foreign ministers of the OSCE countries in Belgrade.

The meeting will address issues relating to increasing the effectiveness of the organization, specifically, the possibility of adding peacekeeping missions to the OSCE mandate, Zannier told a press conference following negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. He added that legal agreements with the member countries are necessary for this to be achieved.

He said that there are good reasons to form the legal status of the OSCE, adding that more specific discussion of this matter can continue in the nearest future.
