CIS leaders sign 16 documents at Kazakhstan summit
BURABAI (Kazakhstan). Oct 16 (Interfax) - The leaders of member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) adopted a statement on the fight against international terrorism and a military cooperation concept for the CIS member countries for the period up to 2020, as well as signing another 14 documents at their summit in Kazakhstan's Burabai on Friday.
The participants in the meeting also adopted a statement dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, an address on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a decision to form a group of border guard and other agencies to tackle possible crises on the external borders of the CIS, as well as a 2016-2020 cooperation program to boost security along the organization's external borders.
A number of documents address cooperation between law enforcement agencies and regulate the creation of joint investigative groups and a council of the heads of the CIS member states' penitentiary services.
The documents signed today also include an agreement on cooperation in preventing emergencies and cleanup operations.
In addition to that, the CIS leaders endorsed candidates for the post of head of the CIS Antiterrorist Center and chairman of the Air Defense Coordination Council of the CIS Defense Ministers' Committee.
A protocol was also signed, allowing Kyrgyzstan to take over the CIS presidency from Kazakhstan in 2016.
The leaders agreed that the next CIS summit would be held in Kyrgyzstan on September 16, 2016.
