Syrian problem cannot be solved without Iran, other regional nations - Putin

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Sochi. Oct 22 (Interfax) - The Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, must join the efforts to settle the Syrian crisis, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

"I think other regional countries, without which this issue cannot be resolved, I mean primarily Iran, should also get involved," Putin told the Valdai Discussion Club.

Speaking of the upcoming Vienna meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, the United States, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Putin said: "At least at this stage let the ministers meet and talk."

He also confirmed that Russia is "in close contact with Iranian partners" on the Syrian issue.

"Iran is making its substantial contribution in the settlement process," the president said.
