New-generation corvettes equipped with Kalibr-NK missiles to join all Russian fleets - Navy deputy commander
MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax-AVN) - All fleets of the Russian Navy will receive new-generation light-class corvettes equipped with Kalibr-NK missiles, the Russian Navy's deputy commander in charge of armaments, Vice Admiral Viktor Bursuk, has said.
"The light-class corvettes developed by the Almaz Central Design Bureau, which is St Petersburg's design bureau, come as a further logical follow-up to these ships [ships of Project 21631]. They [the corvettes] will be built at several enterprises simultaneously. A large series is being planned, and they will join all four fleets of our country," he told the Rossiya 24 television station on Friday.
Kalibr missiles placed on board these ships will be their core assault weapon, he noted.
"The range of these missiles allows us to say that ships operating from the Black Sea will be able to engage targets located quite a long distance away, a circumstance which has come as an unpleasant surprise to counties that are members of the NATO bloc," Bursuk said.
