Number of HIV-positive people increases by 10,000 in Russia every year - Medvedev

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - The number of HIV-positive people increases by an average of 10% every year, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.

"The number of HIV-positive people increases by an average of 10%, that is, by almost 10,000, every year, according to Health Ministry statistics," Medvedev said at a meeting of the government commission on public health protection.

These are primarily young people and people at an active age of twenty to fifty, he said.

"The situation is tense in some regions through which international drug traffic is going, it's the Urals and Siberia, but the spread is going on not only among drug addicts," he said.

"The situation has changed, it's a very dangerous disease, which can hit any person, and it's just not fair to pretend it doesn't exist," he said.
