Building crane topples over, killing four in Russia's Omsk - investigators
MOSCOW. Oct 26 (Interfax) - The death toll of the accident when a tower crane collapsed in the Siberian city of Omsk has reached four people, the Omsk regional department of Russia's Investigative Committee has said.
"At about 5 p.m. October 26, 2015, near block No 111 on Marshal Zhukov Street in Omsk, the collapse of the tower crane that toppled over on to the road left six people injured, of whom four people died," the state agency said in a statement on its website.
According to investigators, the crane collapsed on a construction site where a shopping and exhibition center and a hotel are being erected. The falling crane damaged a Toyota RAV4 roadster and a GAZelle Sobol minivan. The man driver, a woman and a child travelling in the Toyota were killed in the accident.
One more child aged five, the driver of the GAZelle and the crane operator were sent to hospital with numerous injuries, but the GAZelle driver died later in hospital.
A criminal inquiry has been launched following the accident under Article 216 Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Russia ("The violation of safety rules during construction works, inflicting the accidental death of two or more people").
The investigation is underway. Detectives are trying to establish the company that owns the crane, as well as the causes of its crash.
