Georgia to lower excise tax for certain types of alcoholic beverages 35% starting Jan 1

TBILISI. Oct 29 (Interfax) - Starting January 1, 2016, Georgia will lower the rate for excise tax by 34.8% for alcoholic drinks made from fruits and grapes.

According to a statement by the press service of the Georgian head of state the decision about this was made a meeting of the economic council on October 28 which was held under the leadership of Georgian prime minister.

"Starting from January 1 the alcohol excise tax will be 6 lari [$2.50] per liter instead of 9.2 lari [$3.80 today's exchange rate]," the statement said.

As it was reported, starting March 1, 2015 Georgia doubled excise rates on ethyl alcohol as well as alcoholic beverages including whiskey, rum, gin, vodka and liquor which earlier were from between 2.5 lari to 5 lari per liter.

The official exchange rate for October 29 was 2.3962 lari/$1.
