Eight die in traffic accident involving bus outside Tula - police

MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Eight people died in a traffic accident involving a passenger bus in the Tula region, the press service of the regional Interior Ministry directorate told Interfax.

"According to the latest reports, eight people died in a traffic accident. The information has just become available that an injured man died in hospital," a press officer said.

As many as 34 people were injured in the traffic accident, he said.

"Sixty-one people, including two drivers and 59 passengers, were on the bus. Fifty men and nine women are among the passengers," the press officer said.

All of the people on the bus are Armenian citizens; the bus belongs to an Armenian company.

A Hyundai passenger bus en route from Moscow to Yerevan fell sideways at 02.10 a.m. Moscow time on the 221st kilometer of the Don federal highway in the Uzlovaya district.

A criminal case was opened over the traffic accident involving the passenger bus under a criminal article on violation of the traffic rules and operation of vehicles entailing the death of two or more people through negligence. The police are considering two theories behind the cause of the traffic accident, namely that the driver fell asleep behind the wheel or a technical malfunction of the bus.
