Mass brawl of prisoners breaks out in Smolensk penitentiary

MOSCOW. Nov 9 (Interfax) - A mass brawl involving several dozen inmates broke out at the second penitentiary in the Smolensk region; one inmate was hurt, the regional department of the Federal Penitentiaries Service has said.

"An inmate suffered injuries in a physical altercation that occurred in the second penitentiary of the Smolensk regional department of the Federal Penitentiary Service on November 8. The inmate was given medical assistance; his condition is fair and there is no threat to his life," the department said in a report published on its website on Monday.

Warden Pyotr Petrov has spoken with the inmates and they "are back to their quarters," the report said.

"The altercation involved about 60 persons. At present, the penitentiary is stable and operates in [accordance with] the normal regime," it said.
