Putin suggests discussing issue of depletion of natural resources at forum under aegis of UN

PARIS. Nov 30 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested holding a scientific conference on the issue of depletion of natural resources and deterioration of the human habitat under the aegis of the UN.

"I would like to confirm our proposal to hold under the aegis of the UN a scientific forum to discuss issues relating not only to the climate change, but also to the depletion of natural resources and deterioration of the human habitat," Putin said at the UN climate conference in Le Bourget on Monday.

Russia, for its part, intends to use breakthrough technologies in the sphere of energy conservation, "including new nano technologies, to reduce toxic emissions."

"Of course, we are ready for mutual exchange of such developments," the Russian president said.

The new climate agreement "should state the important role of forests as the main absorbents of greenhouse gases for Russia, which has colossal forest resources and is doing a lot to preserve the lungs of the planet, that is especially important," he said.

Putin also said support for the efforts of developing countries to reduce toxic emissions is also highly important. "Russia also plans to provide financial and other assistance to these countries, using the relevant UN mechanisms," Putin said.
