Ilyumzhinov sees no link between U.S. sanctions, his possible FIFA presidential bid

MOSCOW. Dec 8 (Interfax) - The president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, has said that he sees no link between the sanctions imposed on him by the United States and his possible bid to run for President of the International Association Football Federation (FIFA).

"Actually, I did show some activity over the events at the international football federation, but so far I can't see any link with this," Ilyumzhinov told a press conference at the Interfax head office on Tuesday.

He announced earlier that over time he might run for FIFA president.

"You know the world football federation has been shaken by crises and scandals since late last year. Several people were arrested. And what is happening to our colleagues in the neighboring international federation is not very good, of course. But there was a proposal to run, and there was a case in its favor. Of course, I will consider where pluses and minuses are. If we deem having enough strength, we will, of course, be fighting for this post. But for now, I have not made any decision because the congress has just finished and I need to consult with colleagues, not least with friends of mine, probably," Ilyumzhinov said.
