Georgian FM says Russia violates air space of the country, calls incident a 'provocative act'

TBILISI. Dec 10 (Interfax) - The Georgian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of provocation due to the violation of the Georgian air space by Russian aircraft.

"A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle has violated the air space, which is controlled by the Georgian central authorities," at about 6.48 p.m. local time on December 9, 2015, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on Thursday.

The Foreign Ministry said that the Russian unmanned aerial vehicle had been flying over the area near the villages of Koshki and Gugutiantkari, in the Gori district, where Georgian police posts are located.

A Russian Mil Mi-8 helicopter transgressed the Georgian air space at 12.48 p.m. on December 10, flying over the police station building situated in the village of Mereti, in the Gori municipality, the Foreign Ministry said.

"This is a provocative act, which is staged against the sovereign state, another confirmation that Russia neglects the fundamental norms and principles of international law," the Georgian foreign political agency said.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry urges Russia to honor the commitments under the ceasefire accord as of August 12, 2008.

"The Russian helicopter crossed the occupation line and returned several minutes later," the Georgian Defense Ministry said earlier on Thursday.

The ministry said that information about the incident had been passed to the committee for the prevention of incidents and response to them.
