Large amount of opium seized in Afghanistan special operation - anti-drug chief

MOSCOW. Dec 22 (Interfax) - Over 600 kilograms of opium were seized during a special operation that involved Russian drug police in Afghanistan in December, Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) chief Viktor Ivanov told the State Anti-Drug Committee on Tuesday.

"In mid-December 2015, with the information support from Russia's FSKN, a Kabul Gates Unit of the Counter Narcotics Police of the Afghan Interior Ministry conducted another anti-drug operation in the city of Doshi, which resulted in over 600 kilograms of opium being seized," Ivanov said.

The drug was discovered in the trailer of a truck en route from Afghanistan via Iran to Turkey where the opium would then be processed into heroin and sent further to Europe and Russia, the FSKN chief said.
