Atambayev hopes to settle Kyrgyz-Tajik border issue within two years

BISHKEK. Dec 24 (Interfax) - Kyrgyzstan hopes to settle the border issue with Tajikistan within the next two years, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev told reporters on Thursday, stating that he has discussed this issue with his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon.

"Recently, I again addressed to Rahmon to settle the border issue within the next two years," Atambayev said at a press conference on the year results.

"Rahmon and I are keeping the issue of borders, their demarcation and delimitation under control," Atambayev said.

The Kyrgyz president also noted the positive dynamics in bringing down the conflicts in the border area, the number of which has decreased twice in 2015.

As about 900 kilometers of Kyrgyz-Tajik common border are not defined, conflicts occur between residents of the border districts of the two countries due to the division of lands, water resources and transportation routes. In 2013, the presidents of the two countries agreed on the need to accelerate the works for delimiting and demarking the border.
