Kyiv attempting to justify driver of Ukrainian general consulate in St. Petersburg who ran over pensioner

KYIV. Jan 18 (Interfax) - The driver of a road vehicle belonging to the Ukrainian general consulate in St. Petersburg, who ran over a pensioner, killing her, did not violate traffic rules, and the car accident was most likely caused by difficult weather conditions, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maryana Betsa said.

A road accident involving a mini bus belonging to the Ukrainian consulate in St. Petersburg took place in St. Petersburg on January 17. A resident of St. Petersburg, a citizen of Russia, was hurt in the road accident. She died at the hospital. We extend sincere condolences to the victim's family," Betsa told Interfax on Monday.

"The driver did not violate the traffic rules while fulfilling his duties. The road accident was most likely caused by difficult weather conditions and the condition of the road," she said.

It was reported earlier that a 61-year-old citizen of Ukraine, who worked as a driver for the general consulate, lost control of his service vehicle on St. Petersburg's Suvorovsky Prospekt 11/19 on Sunday, the Interior Ministry's Main Department for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region told Interfax on Monday. The car drove into the pavement and hit a pensioner.

A 67-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized in the Mariinsky Hospital, where she died. A criminal case has been opened on the basis of a violation of traffic rules resulting in a person's death, the source said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry confirmed the road accident involving the Ukrainian general consulate's vehicle, in which a pensioner was killed.
