Russia, Egypt call for creation of broad anti-terrorist front - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax) - Russia and Egypt call for the creation of a broad anti-terrorist coalition, the Russian Foreign Ministry said following consultations between Russian and Egyptian Foreign Ministry officials.
The meeting participants "stated an increase in the threats of terrorism and radicalism and emphasized the importance of creating a broad anti-terrorist front based on the norms of international law and the provisions of the UN Charter," the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on its website.
Russian-Egyptian consultations involving Russian presidential envoy on the Middle East and African countries and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Osama Al-Majdoub took place in the Russian Foreign Ministry on January 21.
"Special attention was given to the development of the situation in Syria and around it. The general position of Moscow and Cairo that there is no alternative to political settlement of the Syrian crisis through inclusive inter-Syrian dialogue under the aegis of the UN with support from the International Syria Support Group was confirmed," the report says.
"The exchange of opinions also revealed close or similar approaches of Russia and Egypt to the settlement in Libya. Additionally, the meeting participants emphasized the importance of increasing the consolidated efforts to unblock the Middle East settlement process, primarily on the Palestinian-Israeli track," the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
The consultation participants agreed to continue close coordination of Russia's and Egypt's approaches to the key Middle Eastern and African issues, including in the UN and on other international platforms.
Among the consultation participants were also Egyptian Foreign Ministry envoy on the Middle Eastern settlement El Naggar and Sergei Vershinin, director of the Department on the Middle East and Northern Africa of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
