Attempts to disrupt Syria talks raise likelihood of forceful intervention in situation - Matviyenko

MOSCOW. Feb 10 (Interfax) - Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko has not ruled out possible attempts to disrupt the Geneva talks on Syria.

"Not everyone is happy about possible agreements in Geneva, so, one cannot rule out attempts to disrupt these talks, which raises the likelihood of attempts of forceful intervention in Syria," she told reporters on Wednesday.

"Nevertheless, I am hoping for common sense, and assume that no one will allow themselves a large-scale invasion of Syria, because this, of course, could lead to a serious international conflict," she said.

When asked if military clashes were possible between the Russian military and the coalition members as the situation escalates, she said: "Certainly, no one would go to any war or military clashes, this is unacceptable."

Russia is doing everything for the launch of the inclusive intra-Syrian dialogue, so as to ensure the negotiating process in Geneva, she said.

"We will continue our efforts to create conditions for a peaceful negotiating process," the speaker said.

Hopefully, the parties will still be able to reach peace deals and solutions to end the hostilities in Syria, she said.
