Sevastopol governor against direct elections in city
SIMFEROPOL. Feb 16 (Interfax) - Sevastopol Governor, Sergei Menyaylo, has spoken out against the idea of holding direct elections in the city, and has supported the existing procedure for appointing the head of the executive branch of power in the regions.
"I back strict power vertical. I am for the governors, the executive branch of power to be appointed," Menyaylo said, in an interview with Vladimir Pozner, shown on Russia's Channel One television station last night.
Elections are technologies, the governor said.
"We see how they [elections] proceed on some occasions," he said.
On Friday, Sevastopol Legislature head Alexei Chaly, who is currently on vacation, suggested that Menyaylo should hand in his resignation, and prepare for the city's direct gubernatorial elections in the status of acting governor.
