Russia cuts production of confectionary goods by 1% in 2015

MOSCOW. Feb 17 (Interfax) - The production of confectionary goods in Russia fell by 0.9% in 2015, the largest segment of the sector, the production flour confectionary goods with a long shelf life demonstrated growth.

The production of chocolate without additives, cakes and pies fell most of all.

The volume of production of all types of confectionary goods in Russia last year amounted to 3.465 million tonnes, the Confectionary Market Research Center said.

In the largest category (cookies, waffles, muffins, rolls, cakes - four goods with a long shelf life, 40% of which are desserts), production rose 5.4%, to 1.38 million tonnes.

The production of chocolate and sugary confectionary goods fell 2.5% to 1.7 million tonnes. The production of chocolate fell 5.3%, while the production of chocolate candy rose by almost 5% due to a fall in the share of cocoa ingredients in the products.

The production of flour confectionary goods with a short shelf life (cakes, pies) fell 14.7% in 2015 to 352,000 tonnes.

Last year on the market a flow of consumption was noted in the flour confectionary goods with a long shelf life category, because price growth for them was lower than in other categories (15%-20%). Chocolate and sugary confectionary goods rose in price by 30%-38%.

"The weakening of the ruble's exchange rate led to quite high price growth for all types of confectionary goods during 2015. But if chocolate rose in price at the highest rates, the price growth for flour confectionary goods with a long shelf life was nearly 50% lower, which led to the concentration of main consumer demand in this category," Confectionary Market Research Center executive director Yelizaveta Nikitina was cited in the statement as saying.

"With the deepening of the crisis, the sector is expecting even more narrowing of demand for desserts, the growth of competition and the reduction of production's profitability," she said.
