Libyan experience demonstrates no-fly zone results - Russian Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. Feb 18 (Interfax) - No one wants the Libyan scenario, in which a no-fly zone has negative consequences for the country and the whole region, to be repeated, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said.
"I think no one wants the Libyan scenario to be repeated. The international community has experienced this concept once [the no-fly zone]," she said at a press briefing, answering a question about Moscow's attitude to the no-fly zone initiative for northern Syria, put forth by German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The result of this concept "is visible not only in Libya, or better said, it is not visible in Libya at all, because one would rather not see what is happening to that country," Zakharova said.
"The result is visible far outside Libya, in Europe, and it will soon be visible outside Europe," she said.
Zakharova noted that the idea of a no-fly zone in northern Syria was not generated by Merkel, but was actively promoted by the Turkish authorities.
This zone will require consent from Damascus, the Russian diplomat said.
