Kyiv says Ukrainian soldiers manage to deter enemy's attempted attack near Zaitseve

KYIV. Feb 25 (Interfax) - Ukrainian forces repulsed an attempted offensive on the part of their armed opponents near Zaitseve in Donbas late on Wednesday - in the early hours of Thursday, Oleksandr Motuzyanik, spokesman for the Ukrainian presidential administration, said.

"The militants made an attempt to attack, repeatedly using 82mm mortars, grenade launchers, small arms and, especially largely, heavy machineguns. The combat endured for almost 24 hours. The Ukrainian soldiers stood out and then flung the opposing side back from the high ground that it had held. The soldiers collected a large number of arms in the positions abandoned," Motuzyanik told a briefing conference in Kyiv on Thursday.

He also spoke about the turbulent situation observed near Donetsk airport over the past 24 hours. The enemy used small arms, grenade launchers and large-caliber machineguns near Pisky, Opytne and Avdiivka, also firing mines from mortars near Pervomaisk, he said. "In addition, the armed gangs based in the village of Staromyhailivka shelled our positions near Krasnohorivka and Nevelske, using anti-aircraft mounts and mortars," Motuzyanik said, adding that the shellings also took place near Maryinka in the Mariupol sector.

The enemy did not launch any armed provocations in the Luhansk sector over the past 24 hours, he added.
