Russian Aerospace Forces protected humanitarian planes in Syria last week - Defense Ministry
LATAKIA (Syria). March 2 (Interfax) - Last week, the Russian Aerospace Forces' group in Syria protected the UN-led delivery of humanitarian aid to the city of Deir ez-Zor in northeastern Syria, which had been besieged by the militants, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told the press on Tuesday.
"Last week, our planes covered the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Deir ez-Zor area conducted under the UN aegis," Konashenkov said.
He noted that the airlifting of the humanitarian cargo "was not quite successful."
As of today, Russian servicemen have brought approximately 580 tonnes of humanitarian aid to populated localities in Syria, Konashenkov said.
"It is either airdropped by use of Russian parachute platforms from Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft of Syrian aviation or is transported by truck to the populated localities which are requesting not only a truce but also simply humanitarian aid," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said.
