Decision on federalization of Syria should be made through negotiation, not unilaterally - Deputy Foreign Minister Bogdanov
MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - Russia opposes the decision on unilateral federalization of Syria and believes it should be stated in the new constitution on the basis of negotiation results, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Russian presidential envoy for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov said.
"We have no official information. Such decisions are not made unilaterally. This decision should be made through negotiation, and therefore we have always called for the involvement of Kurds in the political process from its very start in Geneva," Bogdanov said in an interview with Interfax, commenting on the information that Kurds have announced the creation of a federative region in northern Syria.
He said decisions on federalization issues "should be made through negotiation, including on the issue of possible preparation of a new constitution outlining something different from the current state system."
Kurds, who control the northern part of Syria, announced the creation of a federative region in the territory occupied by them earlier on Thursday. The decision was made by the Kurdish party Democratic Union.
