Kazakh parliamentary elections were open, free and democratic - SCO monitors

ASTANA. March 21 (Interfax) - The monitoring mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has found the Kazakh parliamentary elections to be democratic, Aziz Nasirov, the head of the mission, said.

"The elections were open, free and democratic," he told a briefing on Monday.

Nasirov said the voting had taken place in full accordance with the republic's Constitution, the constitutional law on elections and the international obligations assumed by the state.

"No violations of the electoral legislation were registered," he said.

"All necessary conditions for monitoring and organizing the electoral process were created for the mission. It fulfilled its functions, observing the principle of political objectivity, neutrality and non-interference in the election process," he said.

The SCO mission said the electoral legislation creates the necessary conditions for the electoral process participants, guarantees the rights and opportunity to freely vote or not vote, be elected or elect on a fair basis through universal equal expression of will using the secret voting procedure, Nasirov said.

SCO observers have registered high voter activity during the voting, the head of the mission said.
