Russian Navy ships to hold exercise in Atlantic Ocean
MOSCOW. March 21 (Interfax-AVN) - A group of Russian Navy ships will hold a number of drills while crossing into the northeastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, the Russian Defense Ministry has said.
The destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov of the Northern Fleet (NF) has completed its deployment as part of the Russian naval task force in the Mediterranean and on Monday sailed through the Bay of Gibraltar and into the Atlantic Ocean, the ministry said.
"Next, a group of ships and support vessels led by the Vice Admiral Kulakov will head to the northeastern part of the Atlantic. Along the way, the crew are planning to conduct a number of drills in defending ships and vessels crossing the sea," the Northern Fleet said in a press release obtained by Interfax-AVN on Monday.
Furthermore, Kamov Ka-27 carrier-based helicopters will continue flights. "The Russian ship crew will also conduct drills in rescue at sea and helping a vessel in distress," the spokesperson said.
The Vice Admiral Kulakov sailed into the Atlantic Ocean jointly with two Northern Fleet support vessels, an SB-406 tug and a Dubna tanker.
The Vice Admiral Kulakov has been on deployment since October 23, 2015. Over this period, Russian sailors have sailed over 22,000 nautical miles, the Northern Fleet spokesperson said.
