Russian scientific developments are important for TB diagnostics, treatment - WHO official
MOSCOW. March 24 (Interfax) - Russian scientific research can play a key role in the fight against tuberculosis, Masoud Dara, Senior Advisor of the World Health Organization Office at the European Union, said.
The Russian Federation can play a very important role in scientific research, because it has a lot of potential and a lot of research institutions, which can successfully work with their colleagues in the world and participate in the development of new diagnostics and treatment methods, Dara said at a press conference in the Interfax central office.
Dara said that over 340,000 TB cases are recorded daily in Europe, and 33,000 of these people die of the disease.
Dara said the high level of tuberculosis with multiple drug resistance is a problem, despite the decrease in the tuberculosis rate in Europe.
One out of every four tuberculosis cases with multiple drug resistance is registered in the EU, he said. Forty-eight percent of these cases are successfully treated, which is not higher than the world levels, he said.
In this regard, the new scientific research conducted in Russia is especially important for the European region, Dara said.
