Uzbek citizen jailed for 16 years for espionage in favor of Tajikistan

TASHKENT. April 8 (Interfax) - An Uzbek citizen has been jailed for 16 years for handing over classified data to neighboring Tajikistan, local media reported on Friday.

Sharifjon Asrorov, 50, was put on trial, as he has been leaking classified information to the Tajik special services since 1996, according to their reports.

During the investigation it was found that, having established cooperation with the Tajik special services, Asrorov had transferred information about the location of military units, strategic facilities and law enforcement agencies in the Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya and Bukhara regions (southwestern regions of the republic) to them.

"Along with this, he has recruited people who can receive the classified information," the media reported with reference to the trial materials.
